In 2021, The Dan Maskell Tennis Trust (DMTT) provided Whitstable Lawn Tennis Club (WLTC) with funding to further expand on its existing disability provision.
WLTC aims to make tennis accessible and welcoming to all, regardless of physical / learning disabilities or impairments. The individuals who attend these specialist sessions face significant daily inequalities and are invariably excluded from mainstream sporting events.
In lock down, adults and children engaged in creative online sessions with WLTC which were well attended, popular and had a positive impact on participants physical and emotional wellbeing.
WLTC is leading the way on disability tennis provision, below is a summary of what they have achieved with their hard work and commitment…. and funding from us!
Adults Disability Sessions: Sessions are held weekly on Monday mornings with an attendance of between 12 and 16 players
OUTREACH: Adults Disability tennis: working with a local day centre, attended by adults with physical and learning difficulties and taking racket based exercise to them.
Children’s Disability Sessions: Sessions are run monthly on a Saturday morning.
OUTREACH: Dementia Friendly Tennis: The committee has worked in partnership with local charity East Kent Dementia Services (EKIDS) to start dementia friendly tennis.
