Fiona Murphy who has recently set up disability programmes in Devon sent us this update:
“Just a quick update on how things are going in Devon regarding my disability tennis programme, which you have kindly supported with a couple of grants.
I am delighted to say, not bragging, but just so you know your money is being well used! I have managed to win the Disability Tennis Programme for both the county of Devon and then the South West Region. What a surprise, as I am at such an early stage of setting up tennis sessions.
I was required to go to The Birmingham Classic to collect the prize, a fantastic day out and such a treat to be invited. Also it proved to be a great networking opportunity alongside seeing some fantastic tennis, especially as I saw parts of the Jo Konta match and Heather Watson also.
I have also just returned from a trip to Wimbledon, curtesy of an invite to the President’s Lunch. Again a wonderful day and great opportunity to speak to David Rawlinson, deputy President of the LTA, about the tennis sessions I provide for disabled players in Devon.
The wheelchair session, that I have had a grant for, has had a young girl competing at Taunton Wheelchair Tennis Tournament. From this event she has now been invited to attend the School Games at Loughborough, to be part of the south West wheelchair team. I am not sure if she will take up the offer, but what an opportunity for her, thanks to your input. I will be going to the event in a voluntary role as Safeguarding Officer for the Wheelchair tennis teams, which will be great experience for me and also a real chance to be immersed in wheelchair tennis for a few days”.
