Our 2023 Recreational Wheelchair Tennis Doubles event took place over the weekend of April 29 and 30 and was a great success. After so long not being able to run the event it was wonderful to see so many faces, new and old, over the weekend. You can view a short video here: https://youtu.be/eSkNGIHLyHo
28 players took part in the event which consisted of a day of mixed partnerships on Saturday – players played 3 short matches with different partners and opposition and then on Sunday partnerships were allocated based on Saturday points and the event moved into a knock out phase. Two draws were run and our runners up in the 2nd draw were Evan Hansen and Ed Barrett and the winners were Will Barton and Ian Miller. Our main draw runners up were Naomi Tarver and Noel McShane and our winners were Tony Quinn and Tim Risby. A big congratulations to every player who joined in, all matches were played in a friendly spirit with a touch of competition thrown in! We were delighted to have 4 junior players join us who played a junior round robin event on Saturday as well as a coaching session with Mark Bullock, before joining the full draw on Sunday.
The event was run in memory of the great Cathie Sabin, who was a devoted supporter of disability tennis. Cathie’s family attended the event and helped with our presentations, as well as making a generous donation which enabled us to run the event, with funds raised in her memory.
We also ran a raffle over the weekend which helped us to raise further funds which will go towards our grant aid funding and wish to thank everyone who donated prizes.
We were once again joined by Referee Mike Hayes, who wore through his shoes running about each court moving players about! Between Mike and Noel McShane, our committed Trustee who devises our complex scheduling, the weekend ran without any hitches. We also wish to thank our Chairman Sue, Trustees Lesley and Geraint, Duncan from EPC, Lesley Hayes, Lynne Parker and Mark Bullock for their help in making the weekend such a success!
We have had great feedback from players keen to attend again so rest assured we will be back next year… keep an eye on our website for more details.
